Highfield House, Congleton

A private dwelling sited on a former Second World War children's evacuation camp. Several old dormitory blocks still remain on site.

The Upper House Hotel, Staffordshire

The Upper House Hotel was originally built by Josiah Wedgwood for a family member to live in. After numerous different occupancies over the years, the house was purchased by our client in a somewhat run-down state. Our client carefully and tastefully refurbished the house with a large extension added to provide additional bedrooms. 

The Upper House was developing a reputation as a prestige wedding venue. Unfortunately, the restrictions on space meant that the hotel was only licensed for weddings with up to 20 guests.

Our brief was to provide a facility suitable for an attractive wedding venue with a license for 100 guests. Our solution was to build a large orangery facing out over the extensive landscaped gardens, with an option to open the end of the orangery to allow guests access for an outdoor wedding on the lawn. 

​

The design was sensitively undertaken so that the new orangery settled into the rear courtyard of the hotel, to provide an elegant link between hotel and garden.
